VASCO: It may have been one of the first municipal councils in the State to have its own garbage dumping site with a solid waste treatment plant, but with the garbage treatment plant of the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) is itself down in the dumps, with garbage spilling onto the road.
The shed constructed to house the garbage treatment plant has collapsed due to corrosions of the metal pillars.
The entire area is overflowing with untreated garbage and compactors cannot enter the dumping site as the entrance of the site is blocked with garbage. As a result, compactors and garbage trucks filled with garbage are parked in the municipal garage, some drivers told Herald.
When contacted, MMC Chief Officer Y B Tavde said he was aware of the matter and that he has ordered some earth moving machinery to push the garbage inside and make way for the garbage-laden trucks.
When it was brought to his notice that it was only a short-term solution as the treatment plant is not working, Tavde said they have appointed a consultant to set up a new treatment plant to take care of the increasing garbage.
When asked about the collapsed shed, Tavde blamed the monsoon winds and said he will direct the garbage treatment agency to repair the shed.
It may be recalled that MMC for the last one year has been assuring to upgrade the garbage treatment plant with modern technology. A consultant had also given presentation on garbage treatment plant, but till date MMC not only has failed to construct a new garbage treatment plant, but also failed to upgrade the existing garbage treatment plant.
