MARGAO: The Margao Municipality has changed its plans to building the overhead water reservoir at the old fish market and is now eyeing the Gandhi market to set up the tank to meet fire fighting requirements.
An inspection of the Gandhi market by Municipal Chairperson Gonzaco Rebello, civic, PWD and fire officials on Monday evening indicated that the civic body has abandoned plans to build the tank at the old fish market, notwithstanding that the PWD had tendered the project at a cost of Rs 23-odd lakh.
After the inspection, Gonzaco said the civic body would take a call on the Gandhi market site after consulting officials of the PWD and fire services. “The old fish market site is not being considered since the civic body had drawn up plans to build a multi storey parking lot. We would study the feasibility of the Gandhi market site before the civic body takes a final call,” he said.
Leader of the Gandhi market vendors, Babu Azgaonkar said they have no objection if the municipality want to build the overhead tank. but made it clear that the proposed tank should not come at the cost of the vendors. Municipal officials along with fire and PWD officials will now sit and finalise the site for the overhead tank which was proposed nearly half a decade ago to boost pressure in the fire hydrants.
