Herald: What is the market issue? And why is not getting sorted out?
Amonkar: They (CCP) are not aware of what is actually going on. We are there for 50 to 60 years. When the old market was on, the rent was some Rs 10.
When it was decided to demolish the old market complex, the Commissioner Sanjit Rodrigues had said that the rent would be Rs 30 per sq mt, 40% maintenance and 60% sinking fund.
They put construction cost at Rs 10,000 per sq mt on the ground floor and Rs 5,000 per sq m for the first floor. And they took post-dated cheques.
We signed and submitted the agreements. But then the government fell.
Herald : You are all being blamed for creating confusion and not settling the issue. How do you react?
Amonkar: In 2011 we delivered the amounts to the government. So we got a letter from the commissioner, Elvis Gomes, who accepted the money till 2013. But now the mayor, Surendra Furtado, has returned our DDs saying that they are not willing to accept and asked us to sign a new agreement. But he is saying that we should sign lease and licence.
But we have want agreements. We are old tenants, so we should sign lease agreements.
I don’t know how he can say they are not getting any money. We also paid construction costs.
