PANJIM: The weakening of wind circulation over the North Konkan coast that brought heavy to very heavy rains for Goa from June 12 has now resulted into decreasing intensity of the rainfall.
The monsoon which was at its peak from June 12 to June 18, with State witnessing almost 71 percent surplus rains, has now been reduced to moderate. On June 20, State recorded 26.7mm of rainfall, while on June 21 it was only 9.8mm.
The surplus has also reduced from 71 percent to 57 percent, with season total so far being 907.6mm as against the normal 584mm.
Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Goa scientist Rahul Mohan said the State had witnessed very heavy continuous rainfall in most parts from June 16 to 18 due to wind circulation that prevailed over the north Konkan coast.
“The circulation dissipated on Friday after which the intensity of the rains decreased slightly,” he said.
While predicting heavy rains for Goa on June 22 and thereafter again on June 25, Mohan said the upper air circulation over Odisha from Saturday will enhance wind speed at about 1.5 kms over Goa and some rains are expected.
Also, with over five inches of rainfall (137.2mm), June 17 turned out to be wettest day of the season for now, followed by June 3 that recorded four inches (100mm) of rainfall.
