PANJIM: Traffic police booked 341 cases of drunken driving during the week-long special drive against driving under the influence of alcohol.
DySP (Traffic) Dharmesh Angle confirmed that during the week-long drive 341 cases were booked across the State, but day and local traffic cell wise data couldn’t be made available immediately.
He said, “Compared to other drives carried out in the past, the number may look small but if the people have been more cautious and avoided drunken driving themselves, it is a good thing.”
Angle had issued a circular last week, ordering a crack down on drunken driving through a special drive from March 5 to March 11 in which police personnel were deployed from 11am to 1am to book violators.
Asked about the action against the violators, Angle stated that the court would decide on the punishment to the offenders. He said, “The Court will decide what punishment is to be given. Usually it differs from case to case. From issuing a fine or suspension of licences or imprisonment or all, it is decided by the court as per the case and the violator.”
Goa Police has been cracking down on drunken driving with regular drives and in November last year, special drives saw a 50 per cent increase in booking of the offence. As per records, police had booked 4,920 cases by November 2018, a jump of more than 50 percent as compared to the 2,760 cases registered until the same period in 2017.
