Just three months after guiding India to a successful defence of the T20 World Cup title, Suryakumar Yadav has been removed as captain and left out of the T20I squad altogether. The decision, announced by chief selector Ajit Agarkar during the squad unveiling for the Ireland and England tours, marks a significant shift in India’s plans for the shortest format.
While Suryakumar’s captaincy delivered the ultimate prize, India’s selectors have opted to begin a new cycle with Shreyas Iyer at the helm. According to Agarkar, the move was influenced by both Suryakumar’s recent form and the team’s long-term plans leading up to the next T20 World Cup.

Speaking at the press conference, Agarkar acknowledged that it was a difficult call given Suryakumar’s success as captain. However, he stressed that post-World Cup transitions often involve reassessing the squad and leadership structure.
“With regards to Surya, it’s a tough one, having just won the World Cup. But as it happens after most World Cups, you try and reassess what your best way forward is. Partly his own form, but also looking at the next two-year cycle, or a little bit more than two years now till the next World Cup, we thought this was the best way forward,” Agarkar said.
One of the major factors behind the decision was Suryakumar’s dip in batting form. Although India retained the T20 World Cup under his leadership, the star batter had a relatively modest tournament by his lofty standards. He scored 242 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of 136.72, numbers that were solid but not reflective of his reputation as one of the format’s most destructive batters.
His struggles continued during IPL 2026 with Mumbai Indians. Suryakumar managed only 270 runs from 13 innings at an average of 20.76 and a strike rate of 147.54. For a player who has consistently set benchmarks in T20 cricket, those returns raised concerns about his current form.
The selectors have instead placed their faith in Shreyas Iyer, who has built an impressive leadership resume over the past few years. Shreyas led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024 and has also guided Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings to IPL finals. His performances with the bat have been equally impressive, scoring 604 runs in IPL 2025 and 498 runs in IPL 2026 at striking rates above 168.
Agarkar described Shreyas as the standout candidate for the role, highlighting both his leadership experience and consistency with the bat. The chief selector also revealed that Shreyas had been close to making India’s World Cup squad but missed out due to competition for places.
For India’s selectors, the change signals a clear focus on building towards the next World Cup. For Suryakumar, it brings an abrupt end to a captaincy tenure that delivered silverware but ultimately could not survive concerns over form and the team’s long-term direction.
