MARGAO: Winds of change appear to hover around Margao Municipal Council (MMC) with rumours doing the rounds of the civic corridors that local MLA and former Chief Minister Digambar Kamat is making all out attempts to dislodge the Council to gain control.
Sources informed that Kamat is trying to gain support of councillors to form a third front within the council.
The council has 5 councillors supporting Digambar, an independent, 4 from Fatorda Forward panel and 4 from BJP supported group.
With such rumours, Deputy Chief Minister Vijai Sardesai is expected to return from a foreign trip only after May 26.
It is learnt that Kamat too has gone abroad and the attempts to dislodge the council may begin on May 20 following his return. It is alleged that the change of guard attempt has been initiated by the councillors of Kamat’s panel. However, on the other hand, the BJP is taking no chances and has left it up to its senior councillors to spearhead the anti-poaching operation.
The council was formed with Congress and Fatorda Forward panel councillors with Babita Angle as chairperson and Dorris Texeira as vice chairperson. With the Fatorda Forward panel aligning with BJP-led panel post 2017 election, things changed as Texeira was removed as vice-chairperson.
However, councillors denied any such attempt to dislodge the Council.
