PONDA: In a shocking incident, a 29-year-old man and his mother reportedly committed suicide in their flat at Nagzar-Curti, Ponda, on Monday.
The deceased have been identified as Sukanti Venji and her son, Amresh. While the body of Amresh was found hanging to the ceiling fan in one room, the body of Sukanti was hanging in another room of the house.
According to Ponda Police, the incident came to light at about 1.30 pm when Sukanti’s husband, Yeshwant, returned home for lunch, while their son was still at work.
Police said Amresh was reportedly on medication and was mentally ill for some time and fearing he could take a drastic step, his parents had removed the door latch of his room. Police suspect that Amresh managed to put back the door latch before ending his life.
Piecing together the possible sequence of events, police said Sukanti had tried to enter into the room when Amresh had failed to respond to her call and was surprised to find the door locked from the inside.
Police said broken bangles found outside Amresh’s room door had suggested that Sukanti may have banged on the door in a desperate bid to enter into her son’s room.
When Yeshwant had returned home, he managed to open Amresh’s door and found the body hanging from the ceiling fan.
According to police, Sukanti had reportedly warned Amresh that if he were to end his life, she would do the same.
The bodies have been sent to GMC Hospital in Bambolim for post-mortem and police is investigating the case.
