SANGUEM: Tragedy struck a family from Sanguem wherein a woman and her five-year-old son met a watery grave when the car in which they were travelling plunged into the river from the Taripanto Bridge at Sanguem, late Monday evening. However, the husband, who was driving the car, is feared dead too.
The police managed to retrieve the bodies of the bodies of the woman and her son who were identified as Rekha Naik and Divyansh Naik. However, the search for the driver, Milind, which continued till late night, proved futile.
The heart wrenching incident happened at around 8.45 pm at the Taripanto Bridge, when the vehicle in which the family was travelling from Kuinamol-Kalay plunged into the river.
On receiving information about the accident, the Sanguem Police rushed to the site and sought the assistance of the Fire and Emergency Services to conduct the rescue operations.
However, due to the high tide and darkness enveloping the area, the retrieval of the ill-fated car from the river took nearly two hours.
While the exact cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained, it is suspected that that the driver may have lost control of the car upon reaching the bridge.
The news of the tragic incident spread quickly, prompting a large number of locals to rush to the site.
Sanguem PI Pravin Gawas, Curchorem PI Vaibhav Naik and Sanguem Mamlatdar were at the spot till the car was retrieved.
