South Goa Congress MP Viriato Fernandes has taken a strong stand against the government, accusing it of failing to ensure the safety of women in Goa. Speaking at a Goa Pradesh Mahila Congress (GPMC) block strengthening meeting in Vasco, Fernandes said the situation has become so dire that women now fear stepping out even during the day.
“Goa was once a place where women felt safe even late at night. If someone was delayed due to work or a bus breakdown, families didn’t panic. Today, even stepping out in broad daylight causes anxiety,” he said.

Fernandes also raised concerns about harassment in public spaces, particularly along the Panjim waterfront. He claimed that women and girls are subjected to inappropriate and degrading remarks by outsiders, calling it a reflection of the growing lack of respect and safety in the state.
The meeting saw participation from leaders and workers across Mormugao, Vasco, Cortalim, and Dabolim, as part of preparations for the 2027 elections. Four new Mahila Block Presidents were appointed: Shradha Kalangutkar (Vasco), Akshada Wadekar (Dabolim), Vinika Arolkar (Mormugao), and Lata Naik (Cortalim).
Senior Mahila Congress leaders present included Beena Naik, Sneha Fondekar, Liberata Madeira, Adv. Shabnam Khan, Mamta Maben, Mollie Da Gama Silva, Sangeeta Naik, and Seema Behre. Beena Naik criticised the government for widespread misgovernance and inflation, stressing how it has particularly affected women.
State Mahila Congress President Dr. Pratiksha Khalap echoed the concern, stating, “No woman is safe today—whether a child, elderly woman, nurse, or teacher. Law and order have completely collapsed.” She urged women to unite and fight for change in 2027.
Fernandes also highlighted allegations of corruption, pointing to a reported case where a government job was sold for ₹80 lakh. He called for an end to such malpractice and stressed the need for better governance.
The meeting concluded with a pledge to strengthen the Mahila Congress at the grassroots level and champion women’s rights across Goa.
