PONDA: Industrial workers on Wednesday protested against a paint company at Kundaim Industrial Estate for harassing its workers that led a worker to attempt suicide by setting himself on fire.
The protest was led by trade union leader Ajithsingh Rane, social activist Swathi Kerkar, Priol Sarpanch Mangaldas Gaude. Several workers unions of various companies at Kundaim Industrial Estate also joined the protest.
According to the protesting workers, the paint company illegally suspended six of its workers a year ago, one of whom attempted suicide.
The protesting workers warned the paint company that they would launch a major agitation if justice is not given to the worker who attempted suicide.
The protest was organised as the health condition of the worker who set himself on fire in front of paint of company, has worsened. The worker is currently undergoing treatment at Goa Medical College (GMC) Hospital, Bambolim.
The workers shouted slogans against the company for harassing workers and demanded action by the Labour Commissioner and the government against the company for violating labour laws.
Trade union leader Ajithsingh Rane demanded reinstatement of the six suspended workers, settlement of the long pending charter of demand, rise in salaries.
Priol Sarpanch Mangaldas Gaude also supported the workers demand.
The workers from Hindustan Unilever, Cadila Health Care, Coalgate, Polinova, Crompton Greaves, Him Cast, Revati, MRF and Apex Packaging took part in the agitation.
