MARGAO: The Water Resources Department on Tuesday razed an illegal concrete slab built over the irrigation canal at Mingfol, Dandeavaddo-Chinchinim under police protection.
Further, work on the excavation of an illegal road at the site was stopped after the opposite party brought to the notice of the Executive Magistrate, S B Gaonkar, that the court had stayed the operation.
Locals residing at Mingfol had been running from pillar to post to get the illegal slab over the irrigation canal demolished along with the road built by illegal filling of low-lying area.
A local resident Cio Fernandes told newsmen that it was only upon a representation made by the local people that the WRD ordered demolition of the illegal slab.
“For the last three months, the local people have been making representations to various authorities. We want the illegal road to be removed at the earliest,” he said.
This morning, a demolition squad consisting of PWD labourers with implements reached the spot, but finding that the labourers found it difficult to remove the concrete slab, the WRD officials gave a nod for the local people to provide the services of a JCB machine to carry out the works.
The locals have demanded immediate action against the illegal road and land filling and called upon the authorities to act immediately.
The opposite party, Kudbodin Sandi later told newsmen that he had purchased the plot of land at Mingfol to build a house and said he has not committed any illegality. He pointed out that his structure was set afire by miscreants two days ago and demanded action.
