PANJIM: The 2nd Kingfisher beach Football Challenge 2011-12 organised by GFA and promoted by Kingfisher alongwith Procam, International, will be played on February 9 and 10 at Calangute beach from 4.30 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Sixteen local clubs will vie for the top prize of Rs 15,000 while the second best will get Rs 10,000.
“Football moves from stadium to beach. Goans being passionate about football, are expected to turn out in large numbers since the matches will be played under floodlights and have a live band, foot tapping music. It will be a prelude of sorts for the carnival, which in any case is not too far away,” stated Govind Tiwari, divisional vice-president, Kingfisher United Breweriers Ltd at the press conference at Crown Hotel, here.
“We need to draw crowds for football. Kingfisher, the title sponsors, has promised that the 2-day affair will have a carnival-like atmosphere with live entertainment being its integral part,” said Raul Rodrigues, senior manager, Relationship Management, Procam.
Lavinio Rebello, GFA vice-president, disclosed that each team will have five players each who will be seen in a 12-minute face-off. The teams are – Odxel SC, Calangute Association, St Sebastean SC Aquem, Clube Sao Miguel de Taleigao, Anjuna Gymkhana, Cuncolim Union, Sporting Clube de Goa, St Anthony’s SC Colva, Candolim SC, Portais Sporting Club, Sai Avtaar SC Anjuna, Aivao United FC, Penha da Franca, Panjim Footballers, Goa Velha SC and Young Boys of Tonca.
“The first edition was held at Colva beach and it was natural that this year’s had to be held in North Goa, and what better beach than Calangute,” expressed Lavinio.
