MARGAO: St Anthony Sports Club, Assolda overcame Ambelim Sports Club 1-0 to romp into the semi-finals of all-Goa Curtorim Gymkhana Golden Jubilee Cup inter-village football tournament organized by Curtorim Gymkhana, at church ground, Curtorim, on Wednesday. There was no score at the lemon break.
After a barren first half, St Anthony were a transformed side in the second session as they created a couple of openings and nearly found success. However, Ambelim goalkeeper Benny Silva made a spectacular save to deny rival striker Socorro Fernandes.
Ambelim made a valiant effort as striker Samson Fernandes tried his best to penetrate inside the rival penalty box but was timely tackled by the rival defenders.
The match-winner finally came in the 58th minute after striker Agnes Vas unleashed a volley which crashed into the net to troop out worthy winners.
St Anthony will now meet ICSC, Paroda in the semi-finals on September 20.
