MARGAO: Ambelim Veterans edged past Quepem Veterans 3-2 to romp into the quarter-finals of South Goa inter-village veterans football tournament, organized by Fatorda Veterans, near Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, Friday.
Ambelim led 2-0 at the break. Ambelim dominated the opening session and kept their opponents on the back foot. Marcelino Fernandes put Ambelim into the lead with snap shot.
Spurred by the early success, Ambelim doubled the lead in the 20th minute when Ivan Fernandes slotted past the rival goalkeeper with stiff shot.
Crossing over, Quepem put up a better performance and called the shots against the rival citadel. Persistent forays bore the fruit when Ivan Coutinho slotted past the rival goalkeeper to narrow down the margin.
Undeterred, Ambelim regrouped quickly and Peter Fernandes put the issue beyond doubt when he punted the ball to the far corner of the net.
Down by 1-3, Quepem went all out and reduced the deficit late in the second half.
