MAPUSA: Anjuna Gymkhana Sports Club registered a comfortable 2-0 win over St. Savio’s Sports Club Calangute to clinch the Late Anthony & Santana Carvalho Memorial Cup, at Poriat ground, Calangute, on Sunday.
St. Savio’s after their big 7-0 win in the semis against St. Anthony’s Marna took the field full of confidence.
A perfect cross from Panny Naik in the fourth minute saw Rohit Kamble rise high above the rival defenders and head the ball into the far corner of the goal which brushed keeper Selwyn hands before entering the goal to give his side the lead.
Stung by the reversal, Calangute came up with series of attack but it was the Anjuna keeper Soma Korgaonkar who came up with two smart saves to thwart Runaal Shirodkar in a one-to-one situation and then fisted the ball over the post of a scorching right footer from Blake Haldankar.
On resumption, Anjuna doubled their lead as Samuel D’Souza scored a gem of a goal as he flicked the ball over the advancing keeper Selwyn D’Souza to make it 2-0.
At the other end, it was once again the heroics from Anjuna keeper Soma who brought two outstanding saves as he punched the ball over the post from Dominic Fernandes strike and then blocked Sanjay Vengurlekar shot from close.
Anjuna Gynkhana received a cash prize of Rs 70,000 plus trophy, while host St. Savio’s received Rs 50,000 plus trophy.
Michael Lobo (Dy. Speaker-Goa Legislative Assembly and MLA Calangute Constituency) was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco (MLA Curtorim Constituency), Dattaprasad Dabolkar-ZP, Shawn Martins-Sarpanch VP Calangute, Lavino Rebello-GFA’s Vice President, Welvin Menezes-GFA’s Secretary, Alirio Lobo-President Calangute Association and other dignitaries.
