PANJIM: CAC Cansaulim came from behind to edge past United Club Benaulim 2-1 and enter the last eight of the VM Salgaocar memorial invitational inter village football tournament organised by Prime SC in association with Margao SC and played at St John Baptist grounds, Dando, Benaulim.
Benaulim made a dream start to surge ahead in the fourth minute itself when winger Alejo Fernandes took a neat pass from Velfrax Furtado to shoot past the rival goalkeeper Anish Naik who was late to react. Benaulim spurred on by the early success should have got the second when striker Levy Pereira ran past Cansaulim defenders Elvino Fernandes and Regan Fernandes to put the ball on a platter for Nicholas Rodrigues who shot wide from handshaking distance in the 17 th minute. Cansaulim slowly got back into the game with skipper Aaron Fernandes controlling the midfield. Cansaulim were rewarded for their efforts, when Elvino put a fine through pass for striker Selwyn Soares, who easily got past the Benaulim stoppers to cleverly lift the ball over the onrushing Benaulim goalkeeper Scot Carvalho.

The Benaulim team was a disjointed side and Cansaulim took full advantage of the situation when medio Aaron Fernandes pushed a low through pass between the out of place Benaulim defenders Osbourne Fernandes and Jolliton Fernandes for Selwyn Soares to cross for the unmarked Dexter Fernandes inside the box fired the ball into the nylons in the 49th minute.After conceding the shocking goal Benaulim got ample opportunities to get the equaliser but Joel Fernandes missed a header in the 46th minute and towards the fag end of the match Faizal Bepari failed to connect a cross of Josborn Cardozo from inside the area.
