VELIM: CAC Cansaulim defeated Maina SC 7-6 via the tie-breaker to lift the Velim Panchayat Cup organised by Sports and Welfare Club of Zaino Velim, at St Francis Xavier Church ground, Velim, on Sunday.
CAC Cansaulim midfielder Aaron Fernandes opened the score-line in the 7th minute with a power-packed shot as the the Maina keeper Johnson Bhagat had no chance.
Three minutes later, Cansaulim’s Hayston Pereira’s long ranger went wide. Jessel Carneiro and Savio Fernandes were outstanding for Maina as both controlled the midfield and defence lines but missed chances to score in the 23rd and 26th minutes respectively.
A defensive lapse cost Cansaulim a setback in the 67th minute as Jessel Carneiro took control of a loose ball and shot to level terms for Maina.
In the resultant tie-breaker, CAC Cansaulim netted through Aaron Fernandes, Chadwick Furtado, Aliston Soares, Casio Soares, Ashley Soares and Jude Fernandes,while for Maina Nevil Fernandes, Aaron Fernandes, Jessel Carneiro Clive Colaco, and Nelson Fernandes scored.
The winners were awarded Rs 40,000 while the runners-up received Rs 30,000 plus trophies.
Vijai Sardessai TCP minister was the chief guest gave away the prizes to winners and runners up in the presence of Fr Jorge Fernandes, Parish priest of Velim, Savio D’Silva Sarpanch VP Velim, Gurudas Kudalkar and other dignitaries.
