Calangute Association drub Panjim Footballers

MAPUSA: Calangute Association got their first win in the GFA’s Professional League as they drubbed Panjim Footballers 3-0, at Duler stadium, here, on Monday.
Calangute led 2-0 at the breather with the goals coming from U-20 Malik Mulla, Domnic Fernandes and Daryl Costa.
Panjim Footballers whose first match was abandoned due to the delay in CRS were slow to get off their blocks and were mostly pegged back into their own half by Calangute who were excellent in all departments of play.
In the second minute, Gaurav Kankonkar got past a host of Panjim players and slided the ball to skipper Domnic Fernandes but before any damage could be done it was cleared to safety by the alert U-20 defender Janio Fernandes.
The beach side who opened the scoring in the 36th minute when Daryl Costa’s floater into the danger box was met by a diving header from U-20 Malik Mulla leaving no chance to the Panjim keeper.
A neat one-two build up initiated by U-20 Jobern Cardozo found Daryl Costa inside the penalty box who in turn relayed the ball to Domnic who was denied by Panjim keeper Preston Rego from close range.
Calangute consolidated their lead five minutes before half time through Dominic Fernandes who provided the finishing touches to a well laid pass from Gourav Kankonkar to make it 2-0.
Gaurav Kankonkar who was impressive for the beach side was unlucky not to get on the score sheet, when in the third minute his fierce shot inside the penalty box hit the rival defender and went for a corner with keeper Preston Rego beaten with the deflection.
Panjim only chance came in the 57th minute when Joyson Gauncar`s long range shot was acrobatically tipped out for a corner by keeper Sanij Bugde who was hardly threatened in the entire match.
Calangute’s Domnic Fernandes muffed up a golden sitter to get his brace in the 63rd minute when he failed to get contact to the ball with an open goal gaping in front of him from a well measured cross delivered by Malik Mulla.
Daryl Costa fired the third goal from a rebound after keeper Preston Rego had paired the shot of Gaurav into his direction to the delight of the travelling supporters to make it 3-0.
Moises D’Sa nearly made it 4-0 but his well majestic free kick hit the Panjim’s frame work and came back into play.
