MAPUSA: Calangute Association railed hard to stun Dempo Sports Club to a 2-1 win in the Goa Football Association Goa Professional League at Duler Stadium, Mapusa, on Saturday.
With Saturday`s win, Calangute moved above Dempo Sports Club to fourth spot with 12 points in the league table who remain on 5th spot with 11 points.
Calangute scored both the goals in the first session through Siddhant Shirodkar (27’) and Kouame Junior (34’) while substitute Suraj Hadkonkar scored the consolation goal for Dempo in the 86th minute.
After a midfield battle, Calangute got the opening goal in the 27th minute when Nickson Castanha inch perfect long ball inside the box which caught the entire Dempo defence off guard saw Siddhant Shirodkar lob the ball in the net over the advancing keeper Shallum Pires.
However, minutes later, Calangute doubled their lead in the 34th minute when Shubham Malvankar delivered in a delightful cross from the left flank in the box to an unmarked Kouame Junior whose bullet header had no answer for Dempo custodian Melroy Fernandes.
Dempo managed to score a consolation goal in the 86th minute when Suraj Hadkonkar’s free-kick found the back of the nets despite a valiant attempt by Calangute keeper to set up a tense final minutes.
