PANJIM: Calangute Association on Friday decided to plunge into the battle for Goa Professional League honours, and will be writing to the Goa Football Association confirming their decision of coming on board the GPL.
The members of the Calangute Association Executive Committee headed by Alex Fernandes alias Boatkar along with Secretary Alirio Lobo had a preliminary meeting with the Calangute Village Panchayat early morning followed by another meeting in the evening sealing the deal wherein the village panchayat decided to support the Calangute Association to the hilt to put the coastal village among the pride of Goan football.
Apart from the President Alex Fernandes and Secretary Alirio Lobo, the other members were Marcelino Pereira, Marcelino Fernandes, Luis Gonsalves, Anthony Carmin, making up a majority of the club members were part of the negotiations.
The club will now intimate the Goa Football Association of their intention to participate, and will call for selection trials on Saturday to put a good squad in place.
Lobo informed Herald that the panchayat had emphasized on quality with the intention to win laurels in the Goa Professional League and so they were on a look out for some very good players.
With regards to the coach, Lobo pointed out that they had narrowed down two names, but refused to divulge any information with regards to the same.
So finally, the Goa Professional League will see a 10-club league and Calangute will be after all replacing Wilred Leisure Sports Club in the draw. North Goa is all set to see another passionately followed coastal belt club in the competition — Calangute Association.
