MARGAO: Hosts Cana Benaulim Sporting Association blanked Maina Sports Club 2-0 to cruise into the quarter-finals of 37th Cana Benaulim football tournament at St John de Baptist ground, Benaulim, Saturday. There was no score at lemon break.

Maina held the upper hand in the opening minutes and had couple of scoring opportunities but their forwards lacked sharpness. They nearly broke the deadlock but winger Melvin Fernandes’ rasping shot was parried away by the Benaulim goalkeeper.

Post resumption, Cana Benaulim started off on an attacking note with good short passes that kept their rivals off-balance as Steven Baptista scored two quick goals.

Stung by the setback, Maina went all-out to get back into the game but their attacks were restrained by the strong rival defence.
