FATORDA: I-League hasn’t been so pleasant for Goans like how it used to be earlier. However, last season Goa’s only team in the I-League Churchill Brothers FC were so close to claiming their dream third title but with few sloppy performances towards the end of the campaign saw them slip to fourth on the table, their best ever since their return to the top-flight football.
Churchill Brothers FC are currently sitting on top of the Goa Pro League table with 20 points and despite having equal points with Dempo SC, are ahead of them having a superior head-to-head record.
On Tuesday, they had a chance to further cement their position on the top as they were scheduled to play against FC Goa. However, their clash was postponed to a fresh date –December 3.
“We are playing our first match against Punjab FC on December 1 and our boys need rest and they have to be fit for the first match,” expressed Club patron Churchill Alemao.
The intent is clear, this edition, Churchill Brothers FC eye nothing less than winning the crown.
Churchill Brothers FC have played their last Goa Pro League match against Corps of Signals on November 23 wherein they outclassed their opponents with a 5-0 win.
“The boys need to be fit for their first I-League clash and we can’t risk anything at the start,” he expressed.
“I am glad we are back at Fatorda Stadium as I always wanted my team to play at this venue. This season, I am confident about my boys that they will give their best and ensure to win the title,” explained Churchill Alemao.
Churchill Brothers were forced to take Tilak Maidan as their home venue after the Indian Super League began from 2014. This is the first time, I-League match will be played at this venue after a gap of almost three years.
“We are lucky to play the first game of the I-League campaign at home and I urge the fans to come out in large to back the only Goan team in the I-League at Fatorda,” added Churchill Alemao.
Churchill Brothers face Punjab FC at Fatorda on December 1 at 5 p.m.
