MARGAO: Dagwal Damon blanked Arlem-Bharebhat 2-0 to emerge Republic Cup inter-ward veterans football tournament champions organized by Raia Panchayat at panchayat ground, Raia, Saturday. There was no score at half time.
The teams started on an attacking note. Arlem took control over the match with striker Adriano Dias conducting raids against the rival citadel.
John Gomes under the Dagwal bar was outstanding as he pulled off some superb saves. For Arlem, Lucas Cardozo and Mathew Colaco were rock solid at the back.
Rosario Gomes nearly found the success but Dagwal goalkeeper John Gomes rose to the occasions and fisted the ball away.
After the break, Dagwal put up a better performance and put tremendous pressure on the rival citadel. Their persistent forays materialized when striker Pele Xavier’s rasping shot beat the rival goalkeeper hands down.
Spurred by the success, Dagwal intensified their forays and doubled the lead when Salvador
Cardozo punted the ball to the far corner of the net.
Stung by the setback, Arlem tried their best to reduce the deficit but failed to get past the rival alert defence.
Dagwal received Rs 3,000 while Arlem had to settle for Rs 2,000.
Rumaldo Gonsalves, Sarpanch was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of Anthony Pango, GFA executive committee member.
