MARGAO: Mega housing projects dominated the gram sabha of the village panchayat of Majorda-Utorda-Calata on Sunday.
Armed with banners and placards, villagers of Utorda came in large numbers for the gram sabha to oppose the mega housing project consisting of bungalows proposed on land admeasuring 7000 square meters.
The villagers pointed out that if the mega project is allowed to come up, there will be a huge burden on the village infrastructure, including water, electricity, garbage road, drainage system, water logging etc. A resolution proposed and adopted at the gram sabha said the villagers are not going to benefit with the proposed project. Members pointed out that locals will not be able to buy even a single bungalow or an apartment in the proposed mega housing project, raising apprehensions over the influx of outsiders in the new housing colony.
Citing instances of projects built in the village, members pointed out that 90 per cent of housing apartments were purchased by non-Goans.
While demanding that the Panchayat reject the construction license to the developer, the gram sabha members insisted that the developer be asked to make plots admeasuring 500 sq mts and sell the same only to the villagers.
The gram sabha members also expressed concern over the prevailing law and order situation in the state.
The meeting reviewed the recovery of house tax from the hotels with members leveling allegations that the sarpanch Moses Vaz was protecting the interest of the hoteliers.
