PANJIM: Former football referee, Uday Dessai, passed away at his residence at Nerul on Tuesday.
The mortal remains were consigned to flames on the same day. He was 71 and leaves behind his wife and three children.
Uday was the founder of Nerul Sports Club which was among the first Bardez clubs to be registered with the GFA.
GFA Executive Committee member, Anthony Vaz, in his condolence message, highlighted the untiring and selfless work rendered by Uday for the promotion of football. Uday was also instrumental in not only laying the foundation of Nerul Sports Club but also working to identify and develop the club ground. He was also a qualified GFA referee, having officiated in official as well as inter-village matches for nearly 20 years, Vaz added.
Frankie Fernandes, former GFA’s deputy chairman of Referees and Asst Referees Committee and Match Commissioner, condoling Uday’s death said: “He was a highly dedicated, unassuming football referee with football being his passion. His simplicity and eagerness in according top priority for football matters was something which I admired always.”
