PANJIM: FC Goa are in desperate need of a win one going into Sunday’s encounter against Delhi Dynamos FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda.
The Gaurs have had a poor start to Hero Indian Super League 2016 and go into the game against the Lions knowing that they must get all three points to give themselves a realistic chance of semis qualification in the second half of the league stage.
The match against the Lions will mark the completion of their first-half of the league stage and Zico, whose team has four points from six matches presently, wants to begin the second half with seven points.
“I think every game is crucial considering the situation we are in, it is important to win this match and finish with seven points here. We can treat the second phase as a new league and try our best,” Zico said.
The Gaurs so far have conceded 10 goals without a single clean sheet. Asked if that was a problem, Zico said, “Our problem is not the defence, our problem is the team. We cannot differentiate by sectors. Our team as a whole has problems. Our team can do and will do better than what we are doing right now.”
Delhi haven’t had a good first half either with their only win of the season coming in their opener against Chennaiyin FC. With four draws and a loss in their last five matches, the Dynamos will be as hungry for a win as the Gaurs, and that makes it a fascinating contest.
Despite dominating possession and creating plenty of opportunities, they haven’t quite been able to finish their attacks.
“I’m not frustrated but yes, we had a lot of opportunities to score. It important for us to be positive and have a good attitude. We will continue this way and obtain a good result soon,” Zambrotta said.
Delhi’s record against FC Goa is quite abysmal having won just one match from their six encounters with the rest of them ending in defeats.
Zambrotta acknowledged the Lions were up against a very solid team. “Goa is a very difficult team, they are very tactical. It will be a good match for us. We have not had much time for recovery since we had a match two days ago and we travelled yesterday. This should not be an excuse though and we have to do our best. We know Goa is a good team and they need to win to be in the top four. At the same time, it is also important for us,” the 39-year-old said.
The Gaurs have had the upper hand in this fixture winning five out of six clashes against the Lions. Delhi’s sole win was a 1-0.
