PANJIM: Sports Minister Govind Gaude convened a preparatory meeting with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Friday with regards to the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup matches in Goa.

    As many as 16 matches are scheduled to be held in the State with the PNJ Stadium, Fatorda, being the venue.

The logo for the FIFA World Cup will be launched on September 21 at the Durbar Hall in the Governor’s palace. Thereafter on September 22, 23 and 24 FIFA will host a carnival.

This will be done in front of an audience of 300 comprising state associations and sportsmen and women. The places for the carnival are yet to be identified. However, the government has considered Cujira and Utorda while the third location for the carnival could be Tilak Maidan, Vasco, said Gaude. The grand inaugural ceremony for FIFA will take place on October 10 at Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Stadium, Bambolim.

Stating that Goa is ready for the FIFA World Cup, Gaude said the government plans to get students to view the matches in order to inspire students to pursue a career in sports.

Ajay Gaude, Director, Youth and Sports Affairs, said FIFA was planning to fill the stadium by ensuring 12,000 kids attend the matches. He said with two groups playing their matches in the State consisting of teams like Germany and France there would be very good standard of football that could be enjoyed.

Ajay said adults would also be encouraged to attend the matches and ensure more people are caught up in the excitement.
