FATORDA: Fr Agnel Multipurpose Higher Secondary School, Verna eased past St Xavier’s Higher Secondary School, Mapusa 2-0 to emerge State champions at the U-17 Subroto Mukherjee Cup for Boys, played at Astro turf ground, Fatorda, on Monday.
By virtue of the win, Fr Agnel earned the ticket to Delhi.
In the first half Fr Agnel adopted 4-4-2 formation while St Xavier’s adopted 4-3-3 formation.
It was Fr Agnel who dominated in the first ten minutes of the match with Flan Gomes spraying passes to Meuton Fernandes and Stalen Lucas, but the duo missed chances in the second and 4th minute respectively.
Brison Fernandes netted the first goal of the match for Fr.Agnel from a direct freekick in the 30th minute.
Aloysius Lobo of St Xavier’s missed a chance to score but his shot sailed over the cross bar in the 31st minute.
The second have saw Fr Agnel pressuring the rival defence.
Flan Gomes had the chance to double the lead but timely tackled by Aryan Sawant of St Xavier’s in the 42nd minute thwarted the move.
St Xavier’s Hudson D’Mello counter attack was foiled by Aditya D,Cruz defender of Fr Agnel.
As the match progressed, St Xavier’s tried their level best to score through D Trindade and Aloyssius Lobo but both missed the chances by whiskers.
Further to keep the lead intact, Fr Agnel guarded the defence line with five men at the back.
Just three minutes remaining for the final whistle, Fr Agnel netted the second goal through Meuton Fernandes glancing header.
Speaking to Herald coach of Fr Agnel Sham Gawli expressed his hapiness about the win. “The boys gave their best and played as per the game plan. We will try to give our best at Delhi and will try to get the trophy to Goa.” Gawli sighed.
