From underdogs to pedigree holders

With a victory that has visibly shifted the spotlight on the I-League for the moment, Café looks into Aizawl FC’s storybook victory and its impact on Indian football

Chapecoense, Monaco, RB Leipzig,
Rheindorf Altach and most famously,
Leicester City FC – these are the teams that
have epitomised the underdog story. Every
single one has challenged the stagnant
predictability of association that in football
big names will take it every time. However,
one can now add Aizawl FC to the list of the
always riveting story of the underdog.
Aizawl FC went on to write what seems to
be a magical script worthy of J K Rowling, by
drawing 1-1 with Shillong Lajong FC . William
Lalnunfela scored a 67th minute equaliser
for Aizawl FC after Dipanda gave Lajong
the lead in the ninth minute. Mohun Bagan
needed to win against Chennai City FC to
overcome Aizawl’s advantage. While they
did, Lalnunfela’s goal meant that I-League
found a new champion.
What lies in store for the team now?
They will represent India in the 2017 Asian
Champions League qualifier. If they fail to
make it through to the competition, they will
instead participate in the AFC Cup next year.
