Even after India’s triumph at the 2026 T20 World Cup, Suryakumar Yadav’s future as T20I captain appears uncertain. According to a PTI report, the final decision regarding his leadership role could rest heavily with head coach Gautam Gambhir.
Reports suggest the BCCI selection committee is not entirely convinced about Suryakumar’s place in the side purely as a batter. His recent performances have raised concerns, especially during IPL 2026, where he managed only 210 runs in 12 matches at an average of 17.

His international form has also dipped sharply over the last few years. After scoring a century in 2023, Surya struggled in the following seasons. In 2024, he scored 429 runs in 18 matches at an average of 26, while 2025 proved even tougher with only 218 runs in 21 games at an average of 13. Although there has been slight improvement this year, consistency remains a major issue.
A BCCI source reportedly stated that selectors initially believed IPL 2026 would help the batter rediscover his rhythm, similar to his explosive 700-plus run season earlier in his career. However, concerns remain over his inability to counter straight hard-length bowling from pacers.
The report further claimed that selectors do not see Surya as part of India’s plans for the 2028 Summer Olympics, especially with cricket set to feature in the Games. “If someone cannot justify his place as a batter, how can he continue as leader?” the source reportedly said.
If changes are made, Shreyas Iyer, Shubman Gill and Tilak Varma are among the possible candidates to replace him as captain.
