PANJIM: The Goa Cricket Association headed by Dr Shekhar Salkar has filed a FIR against former secretary Chetan Dessai and former president Vinod Phadke, allegedly accusing the duo of committing a fraud to the tune of Rs 26 lakh, with the Porvorim police station, late Saturday evening.
In a detailed report submitted to the police, Sudin Kamat, the current secretary, has allegedly accused the duo of cheating the GCA coffers in May, 2008 by withdrawing two cheques, one each of Rs 18 lakh and Rs 8 lakh and making a payment of Rs 26 lakh in cash to Ha Ko Engineering for purchasing of sports equipments, which the Mumbai-based company has denied.
“The said cheques were drawn under the former secretary Chetan Dessai and then treasurer Vinod Phadke’s authority. On perusal of the copies of the said cheques obtained from the Federal Bank, further revealed that there was no signature of any S Rajshekar on the reverse of the cheques and it is not clear whether the actual payee has signed on the reverse or not,” it mentioned.
“The said bank informed GCA that since the cheques were bearer instruments, they have not collected any copy of ID proof at the time of withdrawal. This is very strange and unusual as normally all banks require the payee to give his/her ID proof in the event the cheque amount exceed more than Rs 25,000,” it further stated.
With the GCA elections slated for June 28, Dessai claims these are only tactics against him and his group by Dr Salkar to rig the elections.
