MAPUSA, AUG 11
The Goa girls team will leave for Haldwani, Uttarakhand on August 15 to participate in 7th Girls Sub-Junior Football National Championship. At the group stage they will face Bihar on August 19, Tripura on August 21 and Tamil Nadu on August 23.
Twenty-seven girls were involved in the first phase of training since July 12 at Verna ground. They were being put through their paces by coach Deggie Cardozo and manager Meena Vaz. The training was disrupted for a short period due to the exams which gave the coach time to assess his options before finally cutting down the squad to 20 who are currently being trained at Candolim.
Deggie who plays for Calangute Association in the GFA First Division has learnt a great deal in the off-season, technically and tactically. In May he undertook the AFC C Licence football coaching course conducted byIndian goalkeeping coach Marcus Pacheco. Manager, Meena Vaz who hails from Quepem, was a part of the Goa United team which lifted last season’s GFA women’s title. She also represented the Goa University athletics team. “I am looking forward to the championship, as our girls have worked very hard,” stated Meena.
