MAPUSA: Guardian Angel Sports Club came from behind to register a 2-1 win over Corps of Signals in the Goa Professional League match, organised by Goa Football Association, at Duler Stadium, on Sunday.
Guardian should have taken an early lead when corps defender Paul Victor brought down Myron Borges in the box by to give away the penalty but their foreign forward Abel failed to control his shot from the spot as the ball went meters wide.
Though they missed the golden opportunity in the third minute, Guardian never gave up and came with series of attacks on Army men. Corps keeper Niyas dived to his left to push Myron Fernandes’ powerful strike from inside the box. Ten minutes later, they had another chance to take the lead as Abel covered some ground after getting hold of the loose ball outside the box but keeper Niyas once again came up with an excellent block to deny the strikers from scoring.
Guardian once again made a swift move on the opponents in the 28th minute when U-20 Lincon Colaco sent a low cross to Abel in the box but Corps defender Solomon cleared the danger on time.
At the other end, the Army men were awarded with a free-kick just outside the box but Pawan Thakur could not make any difference to the scoreboard as his curling shot was easily collected by Guardian keeper Jeet. In the very next minute Solomon found the loose ball in the box but like his teammate, he could not make most of it as he shot sky high from 18-yards.
Finally, in the 45th minute, the match witnessed the first goal of the match from the Army men as a quick counter-attack saw substitute Th. Roshan Singh making a darting run on the right wing before curling it to U-20 Cyril Dias in the box, who made no mistake to beat the keeper Jeet with a smart tap-in from close to send their supporter in raptures.
On crossing over, Guardian came out all attacking and completely dominated the first 15 minutes of the second session.
In between these, their coach Riston brought in their luck charm Perryson replacing Lincon to strengthen their attacking and within 10 minutes after coming in, the striker did his job as Guardian found the equaliser in the 62nd minute when experienced midfielder Nicholas Rodrigues found the striker in the box with a fine ball, who later made an easy tap-in to put his side on level terms.
In the 86th minute, Guardian took the lead through Abel. The striker made up for the error in the first half as he brilliantly headed in from 6-yards to Nicholas fine corner from the right, making it 2-1 for the Curchorem side
