VASCO: Gujarat hammered Daman and Diu 8-0 in the sixth match of the Santosh Trophy West zonals, at Tilak Maidan, here, on Sunday. Gujarat led 3-0 at half time.
Gujarat dominated the proceedings right from the star and could have taken the lead in the fourth minute as Pavan Ramanuj set up Irfan Abbasi but defender Dharmen Ira cleared the ball to safety.
Subsequently, Irfan squandered a golden opportunity to score in the 10th minute as his shot flew over the crossbar.
At the other end, Daman and Diu’s Rohit Kadam set up Prathamesh Powale in the next minute but the latter shot wide.
From there on, Gujarat picked up momentum and Pavan Ramanuj opened the floodgates in the 14th minute with a deft placement.
Two minutes later, Gujarat extended their lead through Pathan Sadat while Irfan made it 3-0 before the break.
Change of ends saw Gujarat tormenting the rival defence as Irfan secured his brace in the 51st minute.
Akshay Mall joined the party with fine strikes in the 71st and 77th minutes for Gujarat.
Pavan scored the seventh goal in the 85th minute and Mayank Sailor made it 8-0, two minutes before the final whistle.
