ASSOLDA: Mandopa SC blanked St Anthony SC, Assolda 2-0 in the final to clinch the 8th St Anthony Festival Soccer Cup 2016, at Assolda Panchayat ground, on Sunday.
The 2nd minute saw Avlon Gomes of Mandopa SC took a free-kick but was saved by the St Anthony SC goalkeeper. In the 10th minute Anthony Pereira of Mandopa SC opened the account with a free kick from 35 yards which sailed into the nets of St Anthony SC making it 1-0.
Later, Sandy Colaco doubled the lead for Mandopa SC in the 30th minute from a corner kick by Richard Costa making it a clean 2-0.
Jason Pereira of Mandopa SC moved the ball but Joseph Fernandes of St Anthony SC tackled this move in the 46th minute. Soon, Sidney Vaz of St Anthony SC should have scored through his wonderful delivery but the rival goalkeeper saved it in the 50th minute. Thereafter, in the 52nd minute Joseph Fernandes of St Anthony SC played the ball to Sunny Fernandes shot but flew above the cross bar.
Meanwhile, Succor Fernandes of St Anthony SC long ranger shot hit the cross piece and rebounded back to play in the 59th minute. St Anthony SC struggled throughout the match as Mandopa SC, were allowed to pick their passes with ease.
St Anthony SC tried their level best to equalize but Mandopa SC guarded the fort till the end of the match to seal the victory a clean victory of 2-0.
MLA, Nilesh Cabral, was the chief guest and gave away the prizes to winners and runners-up in the presence of Fr Natalino Fernandes, youth motivator and Parish Priest of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Church, Paroda, Pietyu Fernandes, Raju Banaulikar, Hazel Fernandes, ISL player Victorino Fernandes along with other dignitaries.
The winners were awarded Rs 40,000 plus trophy while, runners up were awarded Rs 30,000 plus trophy. The following individual prizes for best defender and best player of final was awarded to Rohan Pereira of Mandopa SC, best striker to Sunny Fernandes of St Anthony SC, best goalkeeper to Cleton Gomes of Mandopa SC, best forward and player of the tournament to Sunny Fernandes of St Anthony SC, man of the match was awarded to Richard Costa of Mandopa SC and first goal of the match was awarded to Anthony Pereira of Mandopa SC.
Club president Custodio Fernandes welcomed Francisco Fernandes and Agostinho Fernandes introduced the players to the guests and Diogo Fernandes proposed vote of thanks.
