CALANGUTE: Nagoa Sporting Club, who have been recently promoted to the First Division League have set plans and goals for their next big thrust in the Goan football scenario and have received the backing of their villagers, sponsors and well-wishers. The team management divulged plans of procuring a Swedish coach to train their young team of budding footballers to achieve greater heights in Goan football.
The Nagoa team consisting mostly of Goan youth from the village of Nagoa-Arpora and surrounding village of Calangute have jelled well as a unit to win laurels for the club. The promotion into the GFA’s First Division League has infused new life into Nagoa Sporting Club which is the first team from the village of Arpora-Nagoa-Baga to make it to the high profile league of Goan football.
Addressing media persons at Terra Paraiso Resort, Calangute the President of Nagoa Sporting Club Vinod Naik said: “We owe this promotion to our young budding players who put in their best. We are not going to let go of this opportunity and will set our eyes and aims on the next step of achievement, that is the Goa Pro-League and to compete among the best of Goan teams. We hope to achieve the dream with the blessing of MLA Michael Lobo, village panchayat of Arpora-Nagoa, well-wishers, sports lovers of the village and our supporters.”
Delton Gracias, general secretary of the club said: “We have set our eyes on a Swedish coach and deliberations are underway and hopefully we should be able to have a foreign coach for our Nagoa team. We will retain the majority of the boys and may strengthen the weak links in our team to meet the standard and compete with the best. We hope to achieve the best with the support and backing of one and all.”
Lauding the great efforts of the players and club officials MLA Michael Lobo said: “I am glad that Nagoa forming part of my Calangute constituency have made it to the First Division of GFA League and extend my hearty congratulation to the players, team management, club officials and supporters. No doubt it is a great achievement for the players and the club but to sustain the growth of the team there is need of financial assistance which I hope the Government of Goa, GFA, SAG and other sporting bodies will provide the club. The Government should also consider making available football grounds for the clubs who have a provision for such development.”
GFA executive committee members Gajanan Kerkar, Babli Mandrekar, Alirio Lobo and Uday Lingudkar were present and extended their support to Nagoa. The village panchayat of Arpora-Nagoa led by deputy sarpanch Joseph Fernandes, panchas Sakharam Naik, Roshan Redkar, Agostinho D’Souza, Cleophas Fernandes were among those present. Srikrishna Nagvekar, Mahesh Korgaonkar and Asha Palyekar were also present.
