CHANDOR: Navelim Sporting Club secured a berth in the semi-finals after defeating Cuncolim Union 3-1 in the 47th Chandor Seamen Rolling trophy football tournament, at Chandor ground, on Wednesday.
Navelim Sporting club coach Climax Lawrence guided the team with the assistance of Aluzio Fernandes, Clinton Niasso of Navelim Sporting Club was the star-of-the-match with his assists and power packed shots.
Cuncolim did not even have time to settle down as Prestly Gomes of Navelim tapped into the net from a cross coming from the right wing in the second minute. Navelim’s Roven Pereira took advantage from the cross from Preston Costa in the 21st minute hoodwinked the Cuncolim custodian to increase Navelim’s tally. Mezvon Oliveira succeeded in pulling a goal back for Cuncolim in the 30th minute.
On resumption, Cuncolim tried hard to equalise but fell short of ideas. The Navelim defence rose to the occasion to deny Cuncolim the parity.
Clinton Niasso’s solo effort saw him dodged the rival keeper and score in the 66th minute to make it 3-1.Cuncolim exerted extra pressure in the dying minutes which did not bear fruit.
Navelim Sporting Club will now meet Chandor Club in the semifinal on September 17.
