MARGAO: Navelim Villagers Union blanked Cuncolim Union 2-0 to cruise into the semi-finals of All-Goa Velim Panchayat Cup inter-village football tournament organized by Sports Welfare Club of Zaino-Velim at Zaino ground, Velim, Friday. All the goals came in the first half.
Navelim Villagers dominated right from the word go and never allowed their opponents to strike rhythm. Navelim Villagers broke the deadlock in the 17th minute when striker Evelon Gomes picked up the ball from Sanford Cardozo and the former unleashed a stiff shot which crashed into the net.
Spurred by the early success, Navelim Villagers tormented the rival defence with well orchestrated raids and doubled the lead in the 20th minute when striker Allister Gomes beat his marker and slotted past the rival goalkeeper with a 30-yard booming shot.
Meanwhile, Cuncolim Union struggled to function as a cohesive unit and failed to contain the rival rampaging forwards.
Navelim Villagers slackened their pace after the break and allowed their opponents to conduct raids inside their territory. Cuncolim came close to reducing the deficits but their forwards squandered from hand-shaking distance.
Navelim Villagers had a couple of scoring opportunities but their forwards were erratic after reaching the rival danger zone.
