MARGAO: A second half strike by Colleston Godinho enabled Panchwadi United to overcome Navelim Sporting 1-0 and sail into the quarter-finals of All-Goa Nuvem Panchayat Cup inter-village football tournament organized by Parish Youth Nuvem at church ground, Nuvem, Thursday. There was no score at half time.
Navelim Sporting Club had the lion’s share of exchanges especially in the opening session and could have broken the deadlock but strikers Alvito Colaco and Avelon Gomes muffed the chances that came their way.
Alvito Colaco spurned the easiest chance of the day when he ballooned over from close range with only the rival goalkeeper Roopesh Kamat at his mercy.
After the initial scare, Panchwadi United took time to strike rhythm and called the shots against the rival citadel.
Navelim Sporting nearly scored but Panchwadi United goalkeeper Kamat came to his side’s rescue by fisting away Alvito’s rasping shot.
Post resumption, Panchwadi United put up an improved display and raided the rival goal and found the success in the 40th minute when Colleston Godhino bulged the net.
Stunned by the setback, Navelim Sporting launched a barrage of attacks but Panchwadi goalkeeper Kamat stood tall in keeping his slate clean.
With the match drifting towards Panchwadi, Navelim made a last ditch effort but Avelon Gomes blasted wide from close range.
