MARGAO: Panchwadi United Sports Club overpowered Calangute Association 7-6 via sudden death to emerge champions in all-Goa Varca Panchayat Cup inter-village football tournament, organized by Varca Sports Club, at Varca ground, Sunday.
There was no score at full time.
The teams played at a furious pace with Calangute Association taking the control over the match. Panchwadi United Sports Club survived some anxious moments but luckily no damage done to their citadel.
Calangute Association had a greater chance to snatch the elusive match winner but their forwards failed after reaching the rival danger zone.
After resumption, the action on the pitch remained the same as both the teams kept on committing silly errors. Towards, the close end, Panchawadi showed some urgency but their forwards misfired from close range.
In the shoot out, Arroon Almeida, Royst Godinho, Jayson da Costa, Planton D’Costa, Clarion D’Costa, Glen Colaco and Rupesh Kamat scored for Panchawadi United Sports Club while Sarvananad Korgaonkar, Philino Ratos, Christino Fernandes, Ashley Lobo, Marshal Fernandes and Samir Chodankar were successful for Calangute Association.
Panchawadi were richer by Rs 50,000 while Calangute Association had to settle for Rs 30,000.
The following prizes were awarded: First goal of the tournament Vilroy D’Cruz (Varca SC), Best disciplined team Sao Jose de Areal SC, First goal of the finals Arron Almeida (Panchawadi), Best goalkeeper of the tournament Rupesh Kamat (Panchawadi), Best striker of the final Glen Colaco (Panchawadi ), Best defender Colin Ceirro (Calangute Association), Player of the tournament Jameson Noronha (Wilred Leisure), Man of the final Rupesh Kamat (Panchawadi).
Former footballers of Varca village namely Socorro Coutinho, Duarte Fernandes and Thomas Fernandes were also felicitated.
Fr Candido Fernandes, Parish Priest of Varca Church was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of guest of honour Fr Damaciano Carvalho, Assistant Parish priest of Varca Church and Charlton Lourenco, sarpanch of Varca Village Panchayat, who presided.
