DAVORLIM: Parish Youth Nuvem got the better of Chandor Sports Club 4-3 via the tie-breaker in the final of the 12th Davorlim Cup, organized by Davorlim SC, at Davorlim Panchayat ground, on Sunday. There was no score at full time.
Parish Youth Nuvem had the first go after an attacking start to the proceedings but Godfrey Mascarenhas’ free-kick hit the cross piece of Chandor SC and went out of play in the fourth minute.
A well combined move by Jerose Oliveira and Stephen Colaco should have earned dividends for Parish Youth Nuvem but Stephen’s move was tackled by Ivon Pinto of Chandor SC in the seventh minute.
Crossing over, the teams tried desperately to establish their superiority but their strikers let them down.
Jerose saw his header missed the Chandor SC goal in the 38th minute while at the other end, Moses D’Sa of Chandor SC saw his diving header off a cross by Succor Fernandes miss the target in the 40th minute.
Moises had another look at goal but his effort flew inches over in the next minute.
In the resultant tie-breaker, Parish Youth Nuvem converted through Remy Colaco, Jerose Oliveira, Inacio Colaco and Godfrey Mascarenhas while Chandor SC netted through Succor Fernandes, Ivon Pinto and Moises D’Sa.
The winners were awarded Rs 40,000 and a trophy while the runners-up were awarded Rs 30,000 and a trophy.
The following individual prizes were awarded to Best player of the final: Stephen Colaco of Parish Youth Nuvem, Upcoming player of the tournament: Selwyn Miranda and Valmiky Miranda of Davorlim SC, Best goalkeeper of the tournament award to Rosfen Miranda of Davorlim SC and Best defender award to Ivon Pinto of Chandor SC.
First scorer of the final award went to Succor Fernandes, Best goalkeeper to Francis Fernandes of Parish Youth Nuvem, Best midfielder award to Stanley Hadagali of Chandor SC.
Ministries for Fisheries Avertano Furtado was the chief guest but left early. Satyavijay Naik gave away the prizes in the presence of Sabino Raikar, Edwin Cardozo, Jack, Avelino Gomes, Filomena Costa and other dignitaries.
Club president, Francis Dias welcomed. Roney Furtado proposed the vote of thanks.
