PANJIM: PCCE Verna shocked Chowgule College Margao 2-0 in the prestigious AC Fernandes memorial inter-collegiate football tournament, organized by Herald Group in association with GOA, at Panchayat ground, Nagoa, Verna, Saturday.
PCCE broke the deadlock as defender Ayesh Tari sent a long ball into the danger zone which caught the rival defence napping. The ball found its way to Daniel Monteiro, who made no mistake and placed the ball to the right of goalkeepe Rhys Rebello.
In the second half, Chowgule’s showed urgency to crawl their way back into the match but Joel Gama and Ayesh Tari played well in the center of defense for PCCE.
With 10 minutes to go for the final whistle, Yadrif Borges made amends of an earlier mistake and scored the second goal in favor of the Verna college
In the second match, Damodar College, Margao beat a spirited BITS Pilani 2-1. Damodar dominated the match and would score more goals but the resilient BITS Pilani goalkeeper Hargun Oberoi made as much as five excellent saves from shots from Sampan Kenny and Stanford Rodrigues.
In the second half, Damodar College finally broke the deadlock when a cross from the right flank was headed goalwards by defender Calver Fernandes. The ball deflected off a BITS players hand and entered the net, much to the relief of the Damodar camp.
A few minutes later, a defensive lapse by Damodar College led to a shocking BITS Pilani equalizer. With substitute Adtiya Goyal scoring an amazing goal off a pass from Vikhas Bhatt.
Just when everyone taught that the match was heading towards the tie breaker, star midfielder Tunard Fernandes scored the match-winner off a rasping shot from 18 yards out.
