PANJIM: Pilerne Sports Club outplayed Holy Cross Arambol 3-1 in the final to clinch the 17th Vagator Cup All-Goa football tournament, organised by Vagator Parish Youth Sports Club, at Ozrant ground, Vagator, on Sunday. Pilerne were ahead in terms of domination. Arambol did try to comeback but their fight back was not enough.
Suraj Khutankar used the space on the right flank to keep the Arambol defense busy.
Pilerne opened the scoring through Suraj in the 25th minute. They added a second again through Suraj five minutes later.
When Suraj appeared set for a hat-trick, Arambol brought life into the contest by scoring through Stanley Fernandes.
The winners trooped off for the interval leading 2-1.
The second half saw Arambol making play for an equalizer. Their efforts did not bear fruits even after their rivals being down to 10-men.
It was against the run of play that Pilerne made the title safe through the third goal scored by Royston Pereira.
The following were the prizes awarded: Best goalkeeper Kalpesh Bandodkar of Pilerne; Best defender Sanny D’Souza of Arambol; Best striker Stepathlon Fernandes of Arambol; Best midfielder Deo Sanglekar of Pilerne and Best disciplined team Dunes SC from Mandrem.
Village Panchayat member of Verla Canca Milton Marques was the chief guest and gave away the prizes to the winners.
Sanjeev Maheshwari was the guest of honour along with GFA vice-president (North) Lavinio Rebello and GCA general secretary Vinod Phadke.
Vagator Parish Youth SC chairman Fr Herculan Correia and club president Steve D’Souza were also present.
