Accountability and documented targets are the need of the hour if Goa aims to take full advantage of the new Sports Policy, stressed Professor L. R.Vaidhyanathan at Gomantak Maratha Samaj Hall, Panjim on Friday.
Vaidhyanathan, who is the chairperson of Karnataka State Sports Policy Committe was addressing the PE teachers and Headmasters and Principals of schools and higher secondary schools at the one-day programme organised by Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs.
Quoting from the 2007 U.N. resolution, Vaidhyanathan said, “It is the right of every child to play and be healthy,” and remarked that once you integrate physical education with academics in schools one can create emotional stability and avoid depression and suicidal tendencies.
The PE teachers when asked to air their views said that there is need to have one more PE teacher wherever the total strength of the school students is 300. They also felt that PE teachers should not be asked to take up other subjects and that a mechanism should be introduced to regulate the number of entries at the competition level.
Dr Susana D’Souza, DSYA director, acknowledged that the Sports Policy was still in its infancy stage and that schools were provided with the marking scheme late. “As such I have asked the heads and teachers to submit in writing to the department any individual problems that they are facing. The ball is in you court,” she remarked.
