PONDA: The situation was tense at the Curti-Ponda sport complex on Tuesday night after players from the Panjab Tchoukball team allegedly assaulted some youth from Curti.
The incident is said to be reported today at around 7 p.m. soon after the concluding ceremony of the 6th Senior National Tchoukball Championship, here.
There were allegations and counter allegations. However, it is not clear as to who are at fault.
Source informed Herald that the players from Pujnab were accused of snatching an expensive watch from a youth from Curti whereas youth from Curti were accused of misbehaving with women players from the Punjab team.
Situation started to aggravate after several youth from the locality in a fit of rage and revenge begun assembling at the venue. Source informed that Savordem MLA Ganesh Gaonkar who is the president of the All Goa Tchoukball Association rushed to the venue after being informed of the incident. As informed, Gaonkar after the concluding ceremony had left the venue to attend the ongoing assembly sessions.
Meanwhile, the Ponda police also rushed to the site and tried to pacify the agitated locals. Even MLA Ganesh Gaonkar was seen negotiating with the local youth. Finally after over two hours, MLA Ganesh alongwith the Ponda police managed to bring the situation under control. Fearing backlash the Punjab team players were kept in the indoor stadium and the area was cordoned by the Ponda police.
Source informed that police later managed to convince the Punjab players to apologize to the youth.
