PANJIM: Perpetual Convent High School, Navelim thrashed Don Bosco High School, Panjim, 6-0 in the final to emerge champions in the St Dominic Savio U-14 Inter-School Football Tournament played at the Nagoa panchayat ground, Verna, recently.
The Perpetual boys came very prepared and full of confidence and played their game like a well-oiled machine derailing any challenge from the Don Bosco boys. The strong Perpetual Convent HS defence did not allow anything cross their path although the tiny Amaan Sheikh of Don Bosco HS at times tried to go through them but could not complete his try.
The Perpetual Convent HS players showed their supremacy and Royden Carvalho scored in the very 5th minute. He then kept scoring at will cutting across the Don Bosco HS defenders with Anosh Vaz feeding him with accurate defence breaking passes which he soon converted and completed the first hat-trick of the tournament with goals in the 20th and 32 minute.
The Don Bosco HS looked very subdued and tired in the second half, but at times raided the Perpetual Convent HS goal but could not convert their tries into goals. But the Perpetual Convent HS continued their well planned strategic game spreading the game throughout the ground and then scoring with ease.
Messi Pires scored in the 40th minute, Anosh Vaz in the 48th minute and Ashnoy Vaz completed the tally scoring in the 50th minute. It was only Perpetual Convent HS all the way playing and performing like champions.
Socrates Carvalho, a senior Don Bosco past pupil and renowned football player was awarded the Life Time Award for his services in the upliftment of the youngsters through the game of football.
Fr Banzaleao Texeira, Vice Provincial of the Salesians of the Konkan Region was the chief guest, while Sahil Tavora, FC Goa star and Gabriel Fernandes and Nagoa sarpanch were the special guests and distributed the prizes.
In his address, Sahil encouraged the boys by stating the he had played the same U-14 tournament for Boscos and has reached thus far and that youngsters can do better.
Fr Banzaleao gave the youngsters advice how to achieve their dreams like the famous Ronaldo who came up only through hard work.
Earlier, President Thomas Mesquita welcomed and Secretary Luis Fernandes compered the entire proceedings and proposed a Vote of thanks.
