PANJIM: Saipem Sports Club, Candolim got the better of Camottin 5-4 via the tie-breaker to emerge champions of Saipem inter-ward football tournament organized by Saipem Sports Club Candolin at Dr Gustavo Monteiro ground, Candolim. There was no score at full time.
The teams thrilled the large Sunday crowd with their short, crisp passes. Both the teams had an equal number of chances but their forwards were guilty of muffing them. Saipem almost took the lead but Bappu Pednekar’s try missed the target narrowly in the 15th minute.
Saipem goalkeeper of Claro Cardozo effected some brilliant saves to thwart the Camottin forwards.

Changing over, the teams made efforts to break the deadlock but the defenders stood tall in protecting their respective citadels.
In the ensuing tie-breaker, Bappu Pednekar, Paul Cadozo, Valmiki Cardozo, Rohan Morascar and Gokuldas Bandodkar were successful for Saipem while Joelif Simoes, Anthony Duarte, Alex and Jasson found the target for Camottin.
Saipem were awarded Rs 10,000 plus a trophy while Camottin had to be content with Rs 7000 and a trophy.
Other prizes — Best forward: Anthony D’Souza (Camottin). Best defender : Anthony Duarte (Camottin). Best goalkeeper: Claro Cardozo (Saipem). Player of the tournament: Paul Cardozo (Saipem).
Latika Baba Kerkar, panch member of Saipem was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of guest of honour Baba Kerkar, ex-sarpanch of Candolim.
Earlier, president John S M Fernandes welcomed. He compered and later proposed the vote of thanks.
