MARGAO: With yesterday’s huge 7-0 win against Margao Sports Club, Salgaocar Football Club have asserted their dominance in Taca Goa Under-20 football, winning the league with two games still left to play.
The team began their journey with a bang, with wins over St Cruz Club of Cavelossim and Churchill Brothers. The toughest test of their campaign came when they faced Sesa FA, however a Sunny Fernandes strike was enough to give the Green Brigade three crucial points.
After a relatively easy outing against Goa Velha, Salgaocar next took on their Goan rivals Dempo in a battle royal. The game never lived up to its billing as Salgaocar demolished Dempo 3-0 to take them one step closer towards the title. On Friday, they steam rolled past Margao at Tilak Maidan to win the title.
The team is being coached by Joaquim Crasto and managed by ex-Salgaocar striker Ignatius Dias.
The Salgaocar team is captained by goalkeeper Albino Gomes. The defense is marshaled by the robust Jos Vaz who is ably supported by Neville, Anthony and Nevin. Seventeen-year-old Alson has often come in and filled the centre back spot in times of injuries and bookings.
Allwyn has dominated the midfield, while Rayman has been in fantastic form playing the role of the playmaker to perfection. Godfrey Silva has been a wonderful asset on the left side dribbling past his opponents at will and assisting many of the goals. Mario has been solid on the right wing many times playing as an extra wing back.
Salgaocar’s striker force has been their main strength and the dangerous trio of Albino Pereira, Sunny and Ashlon has been fantastic upfront. Their movement and interchange passing has left many a defense clueless and the trio has scored 23 goals in six matches.
Substitutes Placidinho, Snako, Stendly, Shakib, Melwin, Stefen, Vijal, Elson and Aliston have all played their role when called upon.
The team spirit in the camp has been one of the main reasons that Salgaocar have managed to perform brilliantly this season.
