Cycle rally for environment today
MARGAO: Rotary Club of Margao Midtown will hold a cycle rally to raise awareness on environmental issues in Margao on Sunday, whihch will start from Ravindra Bhavan and wind its way through the city and culminateing at the same venue.

President of the Club, Shibu, said the rally is intended to create environmental awareness and motivate people to use bicycles and reduce usage of motor vehicles, that cause traffic congestion and damage to the environment.
Speaker Rajendra Arlekar will flag off the rally at 8.30 am, and the concluding session will be addressed by Environment Minister, Alina Saldanha.Ravindra Bhavan chairman Damu Naik, District Collector, N D Agrawal and prominent dignitaries from Rotary International Dist 3170 along with corporate heads will be present.

PANJIM: The feast of Holy Cross Chapel, Orda, Candolim, will be celebrated on May 5, at 9.30am. This year, the feast will be celebrated by all the parishioners of St Cruz, Orda, Candolim. PANJIM: Due to urgent maintenance work on the 1000mm DI conveying main at Assonora on May 6, there will be restricted water supply to Mapusa, part of Siolim, Tivim, Assonora, part of Calangute, part of Porvorim and surrounding areas on May 6.
Saligao parish feast today
CALANGUTE: The Saligao Parish Youth Group will organize a 2-day Mae De Deus Evening Fun from May 6, between 7 pm and 10.30 pm, in the Church compound at Saligao, to mark the feast of Our Lady of Mae De Deus. The programme will include the live band ‘The Legends,’ Goan traditional dances by Anthony Viva Goa, Goan Konkani Song Samba by Johny and Bushka, prayer dance, a Gospel band, a Gospel play and a Gospel dance, besides Housie and games.
The feast of Mae De Deus will be celebrated on May 5, with Masses at 6.15 am, 7.45 am and 9.30 am (feast mass), while a Konkani drama ‘He Roste Chukiche’ by Mario Menezes will be staged at 7 pm at the Saligao Church compound.
Holy Cross Shrine feast on May 19
PANJIM: The annual feast of the Holy Cross Shrine (Fulancho Khuris) Bambolim, will be celebrated on May 19. The Maddi (Fama) will be held on May 9, at 5.30pm at the Holy Cross premises. The regular novenas will be held at 5pm with Rosary, Litany and Mass. On May 19, masses will be at 7am and 8.15 am. The Solemn High Mass will be at 9.30am and in the evening there will be a Mass at 5pm. This year the main celebrant of the feast Mass will be Fr Jean da Cruz Fernandes, Director of Diocesan Centre for Lay Apostolate.
2 MP natives killed in mishap
MARGAO: Two young tile fitters from Madhya Pradesh were killed in an accident at Rawanfond-Margao early Saturday morning.
While the cycle rider Sriram Jadhav (22) died on the spot, the pillion rider B Jadhav (20) succumbed to his injures at the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim later.
The incident occurred when they were heading to work at Gogol from Mandopa-Navelim and were run over by a petroleum tanker.
Margao Police Station incharge, PI Sudesh Naik said a case of rash and negligent driving has been registered against the driver.
The Margao police are investigating.
11 power dept workers hurt
MARGAO: Eleven employees of the Electricity Department were injured when their Trax vehicle collided with an oncoming basalt-laden tipper truck at Velip Waddo, Balli on Saturday evening.
While one of the injured, whose name was provided as Pravin, was shifted to the Goa Medical College with serious injuries, the others were rushed to the Balli Primary Health Centre and later to Hospicio in Margao.
The Cuncolim police are investigating.
Kidnapping offence registered
MARGAO: Maina Curtorim police is on the look out for a 35-year old Delhi native for kidnapping a 16-year minor girl from Curtorim.
An offence of kidnapping has been registered against the accused M Qureshi and the police are investigating the case.
Maina Curtorim Police Station incharge PI Gurudas Kadam informed that the case was registered following a complaint by the victim’s mother.
He said the incident had occurred on May 2 after the girl had gone missing from her house.
Replying to a question, he said the accused was putting up in a rented premise close to the residence of the minor girl.
The police are investigating.

Now on-line RC for students
MARGAO: Students from South Goa district can obtain their residence and other certificates (RC) for admissions on-line.
District Collector, N D Agrawal on Friday said that the on-line facility has been set up at the taluka Mamlatdar’s office by the district administration. While making an appeal to the students to avail the on-line facility, the collector has asked the students to approach their respective schools for the same. “All the Principals of higher secondary schools in the district have agreed to provide all the support, including allowing the students to use the school computer lab, besides providing guidance to their students to apply on-line for residence and other certificates”, the collector added.
Agrawal said that on-line residence or other certificates can be issued within one day, while it may take 4-5 days to obtain the certificate manually.

Fest to celebrate Miranda’s cartoons
PANJIM: The first ever ‘Sunaparanta Mario Miranda Cartoon Festival’ began on May 4 and will conclude on May 5. It is being organized by Sunaparata Goa Centre for the Arts, in association with Literature Live. The closing function will be held at the historic Reis Magos Fort. This retrospective of Goa’s legendary cartoonist and Padma Vibushan awardee also features some of India’s leading cartoonists Ravi Shankar, C P Unny, Keshav, Hemant Morparia, V G Narendra and Gujjarappa BG. A collection of 90 doodles of famed cartoonist R K Laxman, hitherto unseen, are also on display at the Centre.
The topics of discussion were: Drawing the line between funny and provocative; the art of caricature; can cartooning be elevation to the position of art and the art of political cartooning. In his key note address on May 4, Vinod Mehta spoke about the ‘Lack of Humour in Indian Public Life.’ At the closing ceremony, a special tribute would be paid to Mario Miranda at which the Governor of Goa would be the chief guest.
Vaman Sardesai Memorial lecture
PANJIM: The Vaman Sardesai Memorial Trust and the Institute of Indo-European studies will jointly hold a public memorial lecture on May 6, at the Chamber of Commerce Hall, Opp Azad Maidan, Panaji at 6pm.
In view of the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, exponent of Vedanta, the philosophy of the Upanishads, Rev Swami Pitambaranandaji Maharaj of the Ramkrishna Mission, Hardwar, former editor of the Mission’s monthly magazine ‘Jivan Vikas’ has been invited as the chief guest and will speak on the ‘Isha Upanishad’ the foremost among the upanishads.
Dr H T Nagvenkar, Retd Principal of MES College of Arts and Science, Vasco will be the guest of honor. Rev Dr Antonio F X Rodrigues, CSSR Rector, from the Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, will preside.
The lecture is being organized to commemorate the 19th death anniversary of the late Vaman Sardesai, poet, freedom fighter, former Ambassador of India to Angola and a Padmashri awardee.
Kavalekar’s birthday on May 7

CURCHOREM: Various religious and cultural programmes will be organised in Quepem to mark the birthday of Quepem MLA Chandrakant (Babu) Kavalekar on May 7.
Addressing a press conference, former Quepem mayor and Chairman of the Birthday Celebration Committee, Rahul Pereira admitted that though he had contested against Kavlekar in the previous assembly elections, he was now happy to extend full support to the Quepem MLA.
“I had contested against Kavalekar because I wanted a hospital, a new bridge over Kushawati River and a sports complex for the people of Quepem constituency. Since Kavlekar has completed these projects, I have decided to support him’ said Rahul.
QMC Vice-Chairperson Camilo Simoes, informed that Kavlekar’s birthday will be celebrated by organizing various religious and cultural programmes.
Trawlers cannot be compared to canoes, says GRE president
PANJIM: President of Goenchea Raponkarancho Ekvott (GRE) in a statement issued here, said that at a recently held meeting with trawler owners, in the presence of the chief minister, the trawler owners in their arguments to support their cause, stated that since both, canoes and the trawlers are mechanized, both are equal in energy and capacity to sail the high seas irrespective of the fact that the canoe is fitted with an outboard engine of only 9.9. Hp while the trawler is fitted with an inboard engine of more than 250 Hp.
Rodrigues further said that if that is the case and the trawler owners firmly believe that there is no difference between the canoes and the trawlers, then the traditional fishermen are ready to fish in the high seas, provided the trawler owners keep aside their trawlers and acquire canoes with outboard engines of 9.9 Hp.
The GRE president further said that there is enough in the seas for everyone’s need but not for everyone’s greed. He said that justice would prevail and fishing would be done accordingly, only if it is accepted that trawlers cannot be compared to the canoes with respect to its navigating and carrying capacities which are superior.
In conclusion, Rodrigues reiterated the GRE’s demand that the 5 km fishing ban from HTL be implemented strictly, as was done when late Matanhy Saldanha supported the coalition government in 2002.
